«A cidade de Kinston, na Carolina do Norte, foi o local de nascimento de Maceo Parker, hoje um dos mais reconhecidos saxofonistas da actualidade, depois um caminho de mais de vinte anos percorrido ao lado do não menos célebre James Brown, o rei da música soul. Originário de uma família humilde, Maceo interessou-se pela música desde muito cedo, e ainda adolescente fez as primeiras actuações ao lado dos irmãos Melvin e Kellis, e dos primos, no intervalo dos concertos da banda liderada pelos seus tios, os Blue Notes. A escolha do saxofone apareceu mais tarde, consagrada que estava a paixão pela música de nomes maiores como Charlie Parker, Hank Williams ou King Curtis. Dominados pelo desejo da criação de sons, os irmãos Parker, então Melvin e Maceo, acabam por ir estudar para a Escola Técnica de Agronomia de Greensboro, sem deixarem contudo de nutrir o frenético desejo de continuarem a tocar. Em 1962, numa noite em que Maceo estava fora da cidade a tocar com uma outra banda, o irmão Melvin, então a tocar com um agrupamento denominado Apex, foi observado por James Brown. O homem celebrado com "Sex Machine" propôs então ao baterista Melvin Parker que assim que ele quisesse e estivesse disponível, se juntasse à sua banda. Passados alguns meses, e depois de já terem abandonado a faculdade, os irmãos Parker vão ter com Brown, que de forma hesitante aceita que Maceo acompanhe o irmão, então e supostamente para tocar saxofone barítono (instrumento que na altura Maceo, especialista em saxofone tenor, não sabia tocar e só mais tarde veio a aprender). Os anos que se seguiram foram como uma verdadeira consagração de Maceo, que viu em ditames vindos do próprio Brown (o inesquecível "Maceo blow your horn!"), o incentivo e a certeza para uma almejada emancipação a solo. Depois de vários álbuns editados ao lado dos All The King's Men, (companheiros de Maceo na banda de apoio a James Brown), foi em 1990 que Parker decidiu editar o primeiro álbum a solo. "Roots Revisited", lançado ainda em 90, permaneceu durante várias semanas nos primeiros lugares do top de jazz da "Billboard". Um ano depois foi a vez de "Mo' Roots", antes de "Live on Planet Groove" confirmar o nome do saxofonista dentro da cena funk, conquistando então uma audiência sempre e cada vez mais vasta. Em 1993 surgiu "Southern Exposure" e, um ano mais tarde, o auto-intitulado "Maceo". Contudo, Parker não se limitou a percorrer um caminho criativo solitário, e ao longo dos anos que se seguiram colaborou os seus "2% de Jazz e 98% de Funk" para a obra de nomes como os De La Soul, Deee-Lite, Ani DiFranco, Prince ou até com Pedro Abrunhosa, no álbum "Viagens". "Funk Overload" chegou ao mercado em 1998, e em 2000 foi a vez de "Dial: M-A-C-E-O".»
