«Mais conhecido como o líder dos Talking Heads, do que pela sua carreira a solo propriamente dita, David Byrne é natural de Dumbarton, na Escócia, onde nasceu no dia 14 de Maio de 1952, tendo no entanto sido criado em Baltimore, Maryland.
Filho de um engenheiro electrotécnico, fez parte de uma série de bandas, onde tocou guitarra, antes de entrar para a prestigiada Rhode Island School of Design, onde permaneceu apenas durante um ano.
Nessa altura, começou a tocar a solo e, pouco tempo depoism formou os Artistics, também conhecidos por Autistics, em conjunto com Chris Frantz e Tina Weymouth. Os Artistics passaram entretanto a ser conhecidos por Talking Heads, e integraram na sua formação mais um elemento, o ex-Modern Lovers Jerry Harrison. Seguiu-se a assinatura do contrato discográfico com a Sire Records, editora responsável pelo lançamento dos álbuns que fizeram dos Talking Heads uma das bandas mais visionárias da sua geração, caso de "Talking Heads '77" (1977), "More Songs About Buildings And Food" (1978) e "Remain In Light" (1980).
Em 1981, Byrne colaborou com o produtor Brian Eno no álbum "My Life in the Bush of Ghosts", onde a electrónica se cruzou com caminhos bem distantes, dominados pela percussão. Ainda no mesmo ano, o músico tentou a sua sorte na área do teatro compondo "The Complete Score From the Broadway Production of «The Catherine Wheel»" para uma dança cuja coreografia ficou a cargo de Twyla Tharp.
Em 1985, Byrne realizou mais um trabalho a solo, intitulado "Music for «The Knee Plays", que consistiu num projecto influenciado por uma banda de metais de New Orleans, composto para a peça de Robert Wilson, "CIVIL warS".
No ano seguinte, escreveu, protagonizou e realizou a película "True Stories", e em 1988 assinou o argumento da comédia "Married to the Mob", do mesmo modo que que compôs, em conjunto com Ryuichi Sakamoto e Cong Su, a música para o filme "O Último Imperador", de Bernardo Bertolucci, que lhe valeu um prémio da Academia.
O fascínio de Byrne pela chamada música do mundo, que sempre esteve presente nas sonoridades dos Talking Heads, levou-o a fundar a sua própria editora, a que chamou Luaka Bop, com o objectivo de fomentar o intercâmbio cultural de diferentes estilos musicais, e de facilitar a entrada da música internacional no mercado norte-americano.
A partir de 1989, Byrne pôde dedicar-se a 100% à sua carreira a solo, uma vez que o último álbum dos Talking Heads, intitulado "Naked", havia sido editado no ano anterior. Assim, o músico fez chegar às lojas, em 1989, o registo "Rei Momo", que consistiu numa espécie de colectânea inspirada em ritmos latinos. Dois anos depois, voltou a colaborar com Robert Wilson em "The Forest", compondo a música para toda a orquestra que participou na peça.
O regresso de Byrne ao rock mais convencional aconteceu com o álbum de 1992, "Uh-Oh", tendo o músico seguido a mesma linha musical no álbum homónimo que editou em 1994.
Três anos depois chegou aos escaparates um disco initulado "Feelings", que contou com colaborações de membros dos Morcheena e dos Devo.»
