BIOGRAFIA:
«The Doors foi uma banda de rock estadunidense dos fins da década de 1960 e princípio da década de 1970. O grupo era composto por Jim Morrison (vocal), Ray Manzarek (teclado), Robby Krieger (guitarra) e John Densmore (bateria). A banda ainda recebeu influências de diferentes estilos musicais, como o Blues, Jazz, Flamenco e a própria Bossa Nova.
Após a dissolução da banda no início da década 70, e especialmente após a morte de Morrison em 1971, o interesse nas músicas dos Doors tem-se mantido elevado, ultrapassando mesmo por vezes o que o grupo teve enquanto esteve activo. Em todo o mundo, os seus discos já venderam mais de 50 milhões de cópias.
O grupo formou-se em 1965 em Los Angeles após um encontro de estudantes de cinema da UCLA. Nesse encontro, Morrison cantou alguns poemas para Manzarek entre os quais “Moonlight drive”. Manzarek já tocava numa banda chamada Rick and The Ravens, enquanto Krieger e Densmore tocavam nos The Psychedelic Rangers, mas conheciam Manzarek por frequentarem juntos aulas de meditação.
A banda foi buscar o nome ao livro The doors of perception de Aldous Huxley, que por sua vez o tinha ido buscar a um poema de William Blake, artista e poeta do século XVIII que dizia: “If the doors of perception were cleansed, everything would appear to man as it is, infinite” (se as portas da percepção fossem abertas, tudo apareceria ao homem como realmente é, infinito).
A sua música continha letras de cunho social e político, escritas na sua maioria por Jim Morrison. A batida “jazzística” de Densmore, o bailado das teclas de Manzarek, que com a mão esquerda tocava as partes que deveriam ser tocadas pelo baixo, e a guitarra de Krieger, que mostrava grandes influências do flamenco, da música indiana, do blues e da guitarra clássica, combinadas formavam um som original.
Muitas das músicas dos Doors eram feitas em comunidade; Morrison normalmente fazia as letras e parte da melodia, enquanto os outros trabalhavam no ritmo e composição da música. Morrison uma vez passeava numa praia da Califórnia com Manzarek, quando passaram por uma rapariga afro-americana; tendo escrito, baseado nisso, em apenas uma noite, a letra de “Hello I love you”, referindo-se à rapariga como “dusky jewel” (jóia negra).
A banda rapidamente ganhou reputação devido à sua rebeldia, principalmente nos concertos. Quando se apresentaram no famoso Ed Sullivan Show, que já tinha mostrado grandes bandas como os Beatles, Rolling Stones e The Who para o público, censores exigiram que o grupo alterasse a letra de “Light my fire”, mudando o verso “Girl we couldn’t get much higher” para “Girl we couldn’t get much better”. No entanto, Morrison cantou a letra original, que devido a ser uma actuação ao vivo, deixou a companhia impotente para fazer alguma coisa. Noutro incidente, em 1969, num concerto em Miami, terá mostrado os órgãos genitais; foi por isso levado a tribunal, não se tendo no entanto chegado a nenhuma conclusão. Morrison terá dito que tinha perdido muito tempo com este julgamento, mas que tinha sido uma experiência valiosa, porque ele tinha, antes desse episódio, uma visão muito irrealística da justiça americana,e que o julgamento lhe teria aberto os olhos.
Enquanto Morrison como figura principal recebia a maior parte da atenção que era dada ao grupo, inclusive nas capas dos ábuns era Morrison que mais aparecia, aos outros membros tornava-se difícil de obterem reconhecimento. Antes de um concerto, em que o apresentador terá anunciado o grupo como “Jim Morrison and The Doors”, Morrison, num acesso de raiva recusou-se a entrar em palco enquanto o grupo não fosse anunciado apenas como “The Doors”.
Em 1971, Morrison morreu em circunstâncias misteriosas, quando vivia em Paris, o que levou alguns fãs a pensarem que ele teria simulado a sua morte para escapar à popularidade. Os restantes Doors continuaram, com Manzarek e Krieger a substituírem Morrison como vocalistas e editaram mais dois álbuns, Other voices em 1971 e Full circle em 1972. Chegaram a realizar novas apresentações ao vivo e duas músicas obtiveram destaque: “In The Eye Of The Sun” e “Tightrope Ride”, ambas do álbum Other Voices.
Não sendo um fracasso comercial, “Other voices” também não teve um enorme sucesso. Após a edição de “Full circle”, a banda separou-se por não se sentirem bem sem Morrison.
Em 1991, Oliver Stone, realizou o filme The Doors, com Val Kilmer no papel de Jim Morrison. Enquanto muita gente ficou espantada com a encarnação de Kilmer, o filme continha muitas imprecisões e os membros do grupo ficaram descontentes com o retrato de Morrison feito por Oliver Stone, que por vezes o fez passar por um psicótico descontrolado, sem dar o merecido destaque a sua arte poética.
Nos fins de 2002, Manzarek e Krieger fazem renascer os Doors, com Ian Astbury dos Cult no lugar de Morrison e com o baterista Ty Dennis e o baixista Ângelo Barbera, ambos pertencentes à Robby Krieger Band, chamando a si próprios os Doors do século XXI. No entanto, um processo por parte do ex-baterista John Densmore resultou na mudança do nome para “Riders on the Storm”, alusão a uma de suas músicas mais conhecidas.
A enorme popularidade dos Doors é demonstrada pela quantidade de álbuns que hoje continuam a vender.»
