«Nascido na Califórnia, Ben Harper cresceu a ouvir blues, folk, soul, r&b e reggae. Aprendeu a tocar guitarra ainda criança e montou diversas bandas em sua adolescência, sempre influenciado por nomes como Blues Traveler, Hootie & the Blowfish e Phish.
Sua carreira profissional como artista solo começou em 1993 com “Welcome To The Cruel World”. Sempre seguindo um intervalo de dois anos, foram lançados “Fight For Your Mind” (1995), “The Will To Live” (1997) e “Burn To Shine” (1999).
Uma caixa especial intitulada “CD Box Collection”, contendo os 3 primeiros álbuns de Harper saiu em 2000 e, no ano seguinte, chega o duplo ao vivo “Live From Mars”. O disco foi dividido em um elétrico e outro mais acústico e traz os maiores ‘hits’ do músico como “Excuse Me Mr.”, “Steal My Kisses” e “Pleasure And Pain”.
Seu sexto trabalho é “Diamonds On The Inside” (2003). O álbum é uma mistura de heavy, funk e folk. Ao lado dele estão The Inocent Criminals, formado pelo baixista Juan Nelson, o percussionista Leon Lewis Mobley e o baterista Oliver Charles. Os destaques foram “With My Own Two Hands”, “Everything”, “Amen Omen”, além da própria faixa-título.
Em 2004 o californiano estava de volta com um novo trabalho “There Will be a light”. O disco que reúne 11 faixas conta com a participação do grupo gospel Blind Boys of Alabama, que deu ao álbum uma nova roupagem e trouxe elementos da música country, gospel e da soul music.
Seu mais recente disco “Live At The Apollo” lançado em 2005 traz grandes sucessos como “Well Well Well” e “Church on Time”. As 15 faixas do cd foram gravadas ao vivo em um show consagrado que rendeu ao artista um DVD.
Ben Harper lançou trabalhos que lhe deram o ‘status’ de um dos artistas mais importantes da atualidade. Além de sua música, a aparência e a atitude do músico impressionavam a todos, principalmente em suas performances ao vivo, que não são poucas, já que ele faz em média 150 shows por ano. Foi em função de toda essa consagração que o cantor conquistou ao lado do grupo The Blind Boys of Alabama, o Grammy de melhor álbum de Soul Gospel pelo disco “There Will Be a Light”. O evento comemorou a 47° edição do Grammy, e aconteceu em fevereiro de 2005 na cidade de Los Angeles.
Em 2005 ao lado do premiado grupo Blind Boys of Alabama, o cantor presenteou o público com o CD e DVD ao vivo “Live At The Apollo”. O material traz um registro de um show gravado em 2004 no famoso teatro Apollo em Nova York. Destaque para músicas como “Church House Steps”, “Picture Of Jesus”, “Wicked Man” e “There Will Be A Light”.
Agosto de 2007: Ben Harper acaba de lançar o álbum “Lifeline”, centrado no soul acústico americano, respeitando as tradicionais raízes do género. “Busco criar um diálogo com os instrumentos e com os membros da banda, e, através desse diálogo, conectar-se a quem o ouvir”, disse Ben Harper em entrevista à agência Efe. O processo de criação de “Lifeline” começou após o fim da tour de “Both Sides of the Gun”, em meados de Novembro do ano passado. Ben Harper e os, The Innocent Criminals, ficaram concentrados num estúdio de Paris para gravar e misturar o álbum, o que ocorreu em apenas uma semana. O resultado é um disco em que “não há uma só nota que possa ser eliminada ou uma batida de bateria que sobre ou falte”, afirma o músico.»
