«O grupo Take 6 foi formado por Claude McKnight, irmão de Brian McKnight, no banheiro da Universidade Adventista de Oakwood. O grupo estava no cômodo da faculdade onde estudavam, ensaiando para a primeira apresentação que fariam naquela noite. Mark Kibble, estudante de um colégio próximo à universidade, estava passando por perto quando ouviu a voz do amigo Claude cantando e entrou no banheiro para conhecer o grupo e a canção. Desde então ele se tornou o quinto integrante e naquela noite começava a história do grupo Take 6. Mais tarde, Mark convidou Mervyn Warren para ser o sexto integrante do grupo.

Inicialmente o grupo conseguiu reconhecimento e apoio ao redor da faculdade, mas dentro da mesma só conseguiram hostilidade dos alunos e funcionários por causa do estilo musical que cantanvam, gospel jazz. Desde o início do século 19, as igrejas americanas eram hostis em relação ao jazz porque esse estilo era cantando em clubes noturnos. Então, o pensamento protestante da época era: ou cantava na igreja ou cantava em clubes de jazz. Oakwood é uma universidade Adventista do Sétimo Dia .[1]

Em 1991, Mervyn Warren deixou o grupo para investir na carreira de produtor e Joey Kibble, irmão de Mark Kibble, foi convidado a ocupar a vaga deixada por Marvin.

Em 2005, o grupo lançou seu próprio selo: Take 6 Records.»

ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT - Rap campestre ao mais alto nível.

Ao contrário da maioria dos grupos de rap, este não é da cidade. E talvez seja isso que lhes confere esta sonoridade ligada mais ás coisas da terra do que á agressividade da cidade. Gosto muito.

«A junção das melhores influências do hip-hop, folk, dos blues e até do gospel é o que pode ser ouvido quando escutamos as criações dos Arrested Development. A formação dos A. D. remonta ao final dos anos 80, quando Todd Thomas encontrou Tim Barnwell, na Geórgia, no sul dos Estados Unidos. As actividades da dupla começaram por ser feitas sob a designação de Disciples of a Lyrical Rebellion. O estilo das criações começaram por incidir na área do rap mais duro, designado estrategicamente como gangsta rap. O duo cedo compreendeu que essa não foi a melhor opção em termos de composição, pois a identificação dos dois com a singular cultura do género não era a mais perfeita. A adopção dos nomes Speech e DJ Headliner, para Thomas e Barnwell, respectivamente, foi a manobra que se seguiu.
No ano de 88, a descoberta do som dos Public Enemy foi fulcral para a nova definição de sons da dupla americana. A fusão das categorias anteriormente referenciadas, em conjunto com um discurso político feroz, na defesa da cultura afro-americana e no realce dos aspectos mais corrosivos das desigualdades sociais, passou assim a constituir-se como a postura criativa de Speech e Headliner. A entrada de Rasa Don para a percussão permitiu apurar ainda mais o som dos A . D. Mas, as mexidas na formação não ficaram por aqui. A continuidade do espírito de transmissão de mensagem por parte dos Arrested proporcionou o arranjo de um colectivo ainda mais completo. Aerle Taree, primo de Speech e Montsho Eshe, um coreógrafo, precederam as entradas de Dionne Faris e do conselheiro espiritual Baba Oje.
O primeiro álbum dos Arrested Development, "Three Years, Five Months And Two Days In The Life Of... ", conseguiu um sucesso comercial considerável, para além de ter sido calorosamente recebido junto da crítica. O single "Tennessee", que chegou ao top10 americano, foi só o início de um triunfo que levou o álbum para além dos quatro milhões de cópias vendidas. "People Everyday" e "Mr Wendal", os singles que se seguiram, obtiveram os mesmos resultados. Os Grammys conquistados nas categorias de Melhor Álbum Rap e Melhor Revelação ajudaram a afirmar ainda mais um projecto que começou por ser um mero duo de rap, mas que depressa passou a merecer culto.
O álbum "Unplugged", lançado no mercado um ano depois, contribuiu com o tema "Revolution" para a banda sonora do filme "Malcolm X" de Spike Lee. As mudanças que se seguiram tiveram algumas repercussões a nível das composições do agrupamento. Assim, Headliner saiu e Dionne Farris seguiu o mesmo caminho, esta com o intuito de perseguir uma carreira a solo. As entradas de DJ Kwesi Asuo, do baixista Foley, da cantora Nadirah e de Ajile, ajudaram a algumas transformações no som dos A.D. O terceiro registo surgiu em 94. "Zingalamaduni" provou a qualidade criativa do grupo. Mas, os resultados de vendas não foram os melhores e o que era incontestado no respeitante ao génio do conjunto era agora algo de instável.
Os Arrested Development extinguiram-se em 96, muito por culpa de Speech, que segundo consta, dificultou ao máximo o trabalho dos restantes elementos, depois da saída de Farris. A tentativa de controle de tudo o que dizia respeito às composições e as dificuldades de comunicação com o grupo promoveram mais ainda o fim da carreira dos Arrested.»
